Slate Shingles

Slate shingles being installed on a new roof with tools laying on the rooftop
Slate roofing is a beautiful and elegant option on many different styles of homes. It doesn’t rot and is very easily maintained, with a lifespan of up to 100 years. With a slate roof, you’ll likely never need to replace it in your lifetime. Slate roofing does tend to be a bit more expensive than some other shingle options, but the sophistication and longevity of slate make it a great choice for many homes. Some types of slate include:

  • Natural Slate: Natural slate is just like it sounds — slate shingles with little to no processing. It can come in a few different colors, depending on where the stone is from. Options can include gray, blue, and red. Slate is an excellent material for Utah homes, as it can easily adjust to various weather changes and extremes. It is also environmentally friendly due to it’s lack of processing, resulting In little runoff pollution and less manmade material in landfills when the roof does eventually need to be replaced. Slate is also UV resistant, preventing damage to color and structure from the sun.
  • Fiber Cement Slate: Slate is a beautiful material, but the price tag sometimes isn’t as beautiful to some homeowners. Fiber cement slate can help you get the look of a natural slate roof at a much more affordable price! This material has a larger variety of colors and shapes, with a lower cost. Fiber cement slate is also lightweight enough to be able to be installed on a regular roof deck, without the extra reinforcement needed for natural slate. The downside is that it only lasts about half as long as natural slate, but with how long natural slate lasts, half as long is still about 50 years!
  • Bituminous Slate: Bituminous slate is actually very similar to asphalt shingles. They are both made up of majority asphalt, and have close to the same installation, lifespan, and maintenance. The difference between bituminous slate and common asphalt shingles is the finish. Asphalt shingles tend to have a more sandpaper texture, whereas bituminous slate is smooth like natural slate. Bituminous slate is also very flexible, making It perfect for domed roofs and other curved surfaces.
